10/17/00 KOS Invites You To An Oktoberfest!

Members of the Knights of Sosaria were sitting around the Drunken Dragon Tavern, dividing up some gold from a successful hunt as well as washing down a few dwarven ales. I was getting another round for everyone when a well dressed couple walked in. Greetings were exchanged, as Gwendolyn served an ale for the gentlemen and wine for the lady.

They spoke of their homeland, a placed called 'Bavaria' -- I think that's north of Minoc. The lady spoke of a grand wedding they had attended before their making way to our community. A crown prince and a princess were wed in beautiful ceremony. To celebrate, the royal cavalry and king organized an enormous party, with a horse race as the centerpiece. This all took place on a meadow known as Theresienwiese, and the celebration was named Oktoberfest. The couple thanked us for the drinks and headed on their way looking very happy. On the way out I asked their names, but, unfortunately, I fail to remember them now. We wished them well and thought nothing more of it.

Back at the table, I pocketed my share of gold and eyed a kite shield from the treasure chest we unearthed earlier in the night. Two tired looking gentlemen strolled into the Dragon. While fetching some pieces of lamb and harpy ribs for the two men, I inquired as to their travels. They were making way for Trinsic.

"We just finished with our harvest, and are taking this wheat and vegetables from our farms in Skara Brae," the first man told me as his friend went to tend to the horses.

"Must be a relieving feeling at the end of the harvest?" I asked.

"One would think, once the numerous months of toiling in the fields comes to a close. Yet, it seems unresolved. We make the trek to Trinsic, sell our goods..." The man takes a drink of ale and looks up, in thought. "You know, it would be nice to find some way or somewhere to celebrate our good harvest before heading home. And not just for me and my companion, I mean for all the farmers that work so hard."

The man left some wheat for our kitchen as payment for the ales. I wished them luck and sat down across from Cubrethil, our Tavern Manager. He had an odd smile on his face.

"You know what we must do, don't you?" he asked. Of course I did not. "We should throw a huge celebration for the farmers around the land. As well, in honor of that lovely story the lady told us, we could call it Oktoberfest, with a horse race among other events!"

And so it was to be. That night we sat around the tavern with smiles of enthusiasm as we made plans.

The Knights of Sosaria are proud to invite all citizens of the realm to an Oktoberfest celebration! This will take place at the Elysium Rune Library and Drunken Dragon Tavern on Saturday, October 21, beginning at 7pm EST. In addition to the large quantities of ale and food, there will be several competitions with gold prizes.

First, at 7:30 will be a horse race. All interested contestants should gather in front of the castle a few minutes before to sign up and learn the route of the race at that time. No fee is needed to enter, though you must supply your own horse.

Following the horse race will be an archery contest. Entrants are to gather at the tavern, and gates will be provided to archery buttes. The rules are simple:

1) Contestants must supply their own bow, crossbow, or heavy crossbow. No magic weapons will be allowed. GM crafted is fine.
2) Contestants must supply their own arrows or bolts.
3) One contestant shoots at a time, 10 shots each. Highest total wins.
4) In case of a tie, there will be a shoot off with 5 shots each until a winner is determined.

Our last event of the night will be a joke contest, following the archery competition. Entrants are to gather in the tavern.

1) Each competitor will be given two minutes to tell jokes.
2) Members of KOS will act as a panel of judges.
3) Material must not be obscene. That will be grounds for immediate disqualification.

The prizes for all the competitions will be as follows:
First place = 20,000 gold pieces
Second place = 10,000 gold pieces
Third place = 5,000 gold pieces

All events are free to enter, and contestants are to sign up at the beginning of each event.

The Drunken Dragon Tavern is located upstairs from the Elysium Rune Library in our castle. The castle is located on the plains north of Trinsic, east of the Shrine of Spirituality, and west of the swamps (76o 38'S, 32o 52'E). Gates will be provided from all major banks beginning at 6:45pm EST.

10/07/00 Home Decorating

I thought it would be interesting to showcase some of our more creative members' home decorations here in the Gazette. Perhaps each month we'll bring you a new decorating idea. *grins*

This month, the spot light is on Halas' fish tank. I'm sure it must be relaxing to sit back with an ale after a long day's hunt and just watch the fish.

10/07/00 KOS Proudly Names The Drunken Dragon Tavern

On Saturday, October 7th 2000, the Knights of Sosaria brought to a close the naming of their Tavern located upstairs of the Elysium Rune Library. With the help of Halas, Gwendolyn, Twayn, and Ka'alazar, Breti proudly etched the castle sign. Cubrethil was able to join us later as the party continued into the night. The tavern is now officially known as The Drunken Dragon Tavern. Much thanks to Tallas Elfblade for the submission. He won the prize of 50,000 gold pieces with his ingenious suggestion. Congratulations Tallas!

Citizens of Trinsic, the Captain of the Yew Militia, the Mayor of Britain among others were on hand to help celebrate. Much ale was consumed, plenty of food was eaten, and jester William Smit IV entertained everyone with countless songs. In fact, Will about sung himself unconscious by the end of the night. Thanks to everyone who attended!

If you have not been to the Tavern yet, it is located on the plains north of Trinsic, east of the Shrine of Spirituality, and west of the swamps (76o 38'S, 32o 52'E). Our Tavern is currently open for business, so feel free to stop in for a drink or just some conversation. Staff will be on hand on Thursdays and Fridays from 8-10pm EST.

Keep an eye out for more information on our next event, which will be an Oktoberfest festival. We will have a few contests with cash prizes, great food, and of course an endless supply of ale!

10/04/00 Name the Tavern Party This Saturday!

All the members of the Knights of Sosaria stood by to watch, from Squires to Lords. As I helped steady Halas, he boosted Breti onto his shoulders so that Breti could hang the sign. With the newly etched sign secured to the outside of the castle, we all stood back and looked on with pride.

I thought of all the bickering and heated conversations it took for us to come to an agreement on the name. It was all worth it. I smiled and slowly mouthed the new name for our Tavern. The sign read...

*****************************

Come help KOS celebrate the naming of our Tavern this Saturday, October 7th! We will be proudly etching the sign with the chosen name. As well, we will be giving the 50,000 gold piece prize to the winner of the contest.

The party starts at 8pm EST, and all are welcome to attend, especially all those who gave their submissions. We got many great ideas and unfortunately could only pick one. Ale and wine of course be available in great quantity. *grins*

The Tavern is located upstairs in the Elysium Rune Library Castle, which is located on the plains north of Trinsic, east of the Shrine of Spirituality and west of the swamps (76o 38'S, 32o 52'E).

I hope to raise a mug with ye then!

10/03/00 Guild Meeting and Promotions

Twas a warm October evening when many members of KOS gathered atop the guild tower for a meeting with our leaders. Lord Wolf and Lord Breti greeted us and introduced some of the newer members.

One of the first things Lord Wolf did was announce several promotions. Squires Daedalus, Brunor Pickaxe, and Anubis were accepted as full members of the guild and promoted to Guardsman. Halas, smiling proudly, received a promotion to Defender. Long-time member and our Tavern Manager, Cubrethil was awarded the rank of Knight. Congratulations again to each of you!

Various items were discussed during the meeting. They include: the progress of the Name the Tavern contest; the upcoming Octoberfest event; the desire to do more things as a group, such as treasure hunts; and a suggestion to set up an event planning forum that Squires would have access to. The date chosen for the Octoberfest is 10/21/00. Cubrethil also announced that he wishes to make a generous donation to the guild.

See you all at the next meeting, if not much sooner! *smiles*
